Searching Cases by Name
Nebraska JUSTICE is the statewide trial-court search Dakota County relies on. Every one of the 93 Nebraska counties is covered, county and district alike. Criminal, civil, traffic, juvenile, probate, and related case types are all in there. One caution: it searches parties, not witnesses. Enter the full legal party name whenever you can. Treat a near-match, an entity abbreviation, or a partial caption as nothing more than a lead that still needs a court and case-number check.
The official demo lets you filter by individual or entity, county, court type, case type, subtype, judge, attorney, and case year. Sort controls come with it too. Go broad first. Too many hits from a common name? Add Dakota, then the court level, then the type or year from the paperwork.
- Open the official Nebraska JUSTICE party-name search, accept its terms, and select Begin Search for the Dakota County lookup. JavaScript is required for the one-time flow.
- Enter the party name for the Dakota County matter and select individual or entity when known. Do not use a witness name as the search term.
- Review the initial Dakota County results, then add Dakota, the court level, type, subtype, judge, attorney, or case year only when a broad result set needs narrowing.
- Match the Dakota County party type, caption, and case number before opening Details. A name match does not establish that two people are the same person.
The official JUSTICE search demo lays out the full field set you can use for a Dakota County query.
Filters are good at narrowing to a known Dakota County court record. What they cannot do is replace the case number itself. Nor can they stand in for the clerk when a restricted record needs confirming.
| Field label | Type | Required | Options or format notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Party name | Text | Yes for a name search | Search the Dakota County party, not a witness; use the most complete legal name available. |
| Individual or entity | Choice | No | The Dakota County official demo distinguishes personal and entity searches. |
| County | Multi-select | No | Choose Dakota for a Dakota County result set. |
| Court type | Choice | No | Dakota County Court or Dakota District Court when the court level is known. |
| Case type and subtype | Choice | No | Use Dakota County paperwork before filtering; an unnecessary limit can hide a match. |
| Judge, attorney, year, sort | Optional controls | No | Useful Dakota County refinement fields after the first result set is reviewed. |
Note: A Dakota County name result should be checked against the court, caption, and case number before it is treated as a match.
Dakota County JUSTICE Case Search
The one-time JUSTICE party search is Dakota County's paid public access channel. It currently costs $17 for a completed name search. That fee applies even when the search returns no cases. Results cap at 30 cases, and any details you open stay viewable for three calendar days. Ignore the older $15 or $1 figures; those are legacy prices, not what you pay today.
Updates run nightly, with an approximate 24-hour lag. So a recent Dakota County filing, hearing, or disposition may show up later than you expect. Remember what JUSTICE is and is not. It is a court-record search. It is not a full criminal-history report and not a no-record certificate.
Paid-search check: Review the name, spelling, court level, and Dakota selection before starting a one-time party search because a no-result search is still charged.
Note: A paid Dakota County JUSTICE search can return no cases and still carry the current one-time charge.
Searching by Case Number
For precision, nothing beats an exact case number. The official Dakota County demo format runs court type, a two-digit county segment, a two-letter case type, a two-digit year, then an identifier of up to seven digits. Dakota generally uses segment 22, but whatever is printed on the case number controls.
Two Dakota County examples: C-22-TR-26-0001234 and D-22-CR-26-0001234. Format samples only, not live cases. Note that the year marks the filing, not every hearing that followed.
Dakota County Case Number Codes
In the official demo, the two-letter codes break down this way: CI civil, CR criminal, JV juvenile, PR probate, SC small claims, and TR traffic. The code alone does not settle which Dakota County clerk handles the case, since a type can sit under either C or D. The official case-number demo shows how each component field fits the Dakota County format.
When a number fails, those segments double as a correction checklist. Check C or D, county 22, the type, the year, and the identifier, in that order. If the paperwork still clashes with the system format, ask the Dakota County court named on the notice before swapping out any part of the number.
- Party index
- The searchable party and caption portion of a Dakota County case, not every person mentioned in a file.
- Register of actions
- The running Dakota County log of filings, hearings, orders, and other case events.
- Disposition
- The Dakota County court's recorded outcome or status entry. Read the order or judgment instead of treating a charge or filing as an outcome.
Note: The Dakota County case number is more precise than a common name, even when the name appears in the party index.
What a Case Search Returns
A Dakota County JUSTICE list result typically shows party name and type, case number, caption, judge, attorney, and a Details link. Click deeper and you may find a case summary. Offense information may appear where it applies, along with costs or judgments, judge notes, and a register of actions. A caption link can open still more case information.
No Dakota County case carries every field, image, or public detail. Many nonconfidential filings after April-16-2008 have image links. That promises nothing for historical or restricted material online, though. Read the disposition and order fields yourself.
| Party index and type | The Dakota County result's party/caption information and role indicator. Similar names still require a case-number comparison. |
|---|---|
| Case number | The C or D, county, type, year, and identifier sequence used to distinguish the Dakota County record. |
| Caption | The Dakota County court's case title, which can use an entity name, abbreviation, punctuation, or multiple parties. |
| Judge and attorney | Dakota County result-list fields that may help distinguish a known matter when available. |
| Details | The Dakota County link to further case information, subject to access and public-record limits. |
| Register of actions | The Dakota County procedural record of documents, hearings, orders, and other case events; an available image may link from an entry. |
Dakota County Case Search Details
Online detail is never the whole Dakota County file. A paper-only legacy record may have no public image at all. A recent item can still be working through the update cycle. A missing image points to restricted, sealed, juvenile, unconverted, or simply unavailable material. It does not prove the case or document never existed.
The Dakota County authorized public terminal makes a solid fallback. Want copies? Give the case number, court type, year, and document name or date to the clerk of the Dakota County filing court. Do not take it to the general County Clerk.
Statewide vs County Case Search
Dakota County posts no separate public docket database of its own; statewide JUSTICE is the online trial-court layer. For confirmation, paper-only records, copies, and court identification, the clerk and public terminal are the local routes. Appeals live elsewhere, on the separate SCCALES search.
| Access channel | What it covers | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Nebraska JUSTICE | Statewide county and district trial-court case search, including Dakota County. | Dakota County party-name or exact-number lookup and available details. |
| Dakota County clerk or public terminal | The Dakota County filing court's local records route, subject to public-access limits. | Clarifying court level, recent data, copies, or remote-search gaps. |
| SCCALES | Nebraska appellate case information, separate from the Dakota County trial record. | Following an appeal after the trial case number and court are known. |
Hunting a future hearing rather than a case record? Turn to the Dakota County court calendar. The calendar and JUSTICE are separate tools, each with its own search fields and update patterns.
Dakota County Case Search Options
Two search paths exist. A one-time party search suits a single known-name lookup. For recurring work, the general subscription runs $100 annually. It allows up to 10 usernames or passwords. Free list searches come with it, plus $2 detail access per current case. Bulk access carries separate authorization and fee limits.
Courthouse search remains an option, along with case-number-specific copies, subscription access, and written requests. Never bypass a payment or login gate, bulk-download, or republish protected personal data. Questions about a Dakota County record go to the filing court's clerk.
County Court callers can use 402-987-2145, the documented local route. District Court is trickier. The Judicial Branch directory lists 402-987-2115. The local county page lists 402-987-2114, so verify before dialing. A mailed copy request should state the case number, court, document, and delivery method. Dakota County posts no general court-record email address.
Note: eFiling is an authenticated submission and service system for eligible registered filers, not the public interface for searching a Dakota County docket.
Access and Restricted Cases
Public access covers a lot. Party indexes, summaries, registers of actions, calendars, judgments, orders, decrees, and available images all fall within it. Still, public status does not promise a remote image or an unrestricted copy. Sealed, restricted, juvenile, confidential, and paper-only Dakota County records may be missing from view or show only a limited index.
Personal-data boundaries apply to Dakota County civil records too. When an item is unavailable, ask the clerk whether it is sealed, restricted, unconverted, or subject to another access rule. Working around a limit is not an option.
Public-access rules:
Nebraska Supreme Court Rules §§1-803 to 1-806 describe Dakota County public court-information categories, remote and terminal access, and the bulk-access boundary.
Rule §2-215 recognizes Dakota County public-terminal inspection while preserving restrictions and paper-record limits.
Neb. Rev. Stat. §43-2,108 establishes strict confidentiality for Dakota County juvenile records and sealed juvenile files.
Dakota County Case Search No-Hits
Myth: a no-hit Dakota County search proves no court record exists. Fact: it can reflect spelling, court type, county, year, case type, a recent entry, a restricted record, or a paper-only file. A paid no-hit does not establish a formal no-record finding.
First confirm each search term. Check the full name, the C or D prefix, Dakota segment 22, the case type, and the year. Remember that new filings may take 24 hours to appear in the docket. A system error is usually brief, so wait 10 to 15 minutes and try again. If the problem persists, ask the Dakota County clerk. The clerk can tell you whether the case is recent, restricted, sealed, or paper-only.
